Spray foam, blown-in, fiberglass, attic, crawl space, and pole barn insulation for homes, businesses, and agricultural buildings in Mattoon and Coles County. This is where we started. This is where we live and work.
Insulation Service LLC is headquartered at 706 Dewitt Avenue East in Mattoon, Illinois. We have operated from Coles County for more than 50 years, and the majority of our 500+ completed projects are within a 30-minute drive of this address. Mattoon is not just our mailing address. It is the community we know best, the housing stock we understand most deeply, and the place where our reputation was built one project at a time.
Mattoon is a city of approximately 16,500 residents in east-central Illinois, situated at the junction of I-57 and Route 16. It is the county seat of Coles County, home to Lake Land College, and a commercial hub for the surrounding agricultural region. The city has a long history as a railroad and manufacturing center, and much of its residential building stock reflects that heritage.
The median construction year for homes in Mattoon is 1956. More than 30% of the city's housing units were built before 1940, and another 36% were built between the 1940s and 1960s. That means roughly two-thirds of the homes in Mattoon are over 60 years old.
Most of these homes were insulated to the standards of their era: R-7 to R-11 in the attic, no wall insulation in many cases, and uninsulated crawl spaces with bare dirt floors.
The Illinois energy code now requires R-49 in attic ceilings for Climate Zone 5. The gap between what most Mattoon homes have and what the code requires is enormous. Closing that gap is what we do every day.
Central Illinois weather does not give insulation a break. Mattoon averages 22 days per year below 10°F and summer highs that regularly exceed 90°F with humidity above 70%. The heating season runs from early October through late April—your furnace runs for more than half the year.
Built before insulation was standard practice. Many have uninsulated balloon-frame walls where air moves freely from basement to attic. Attic insulation is often a thin layer of rock wool. Crawl spaces are uninsulated with bare dirt floors. These homes are the highest-priority candidates for dense-pack wall insulation, attic air sealing, and crawl space encapsulation.
Post-war ranch homes and split-levels from Mattoon's manufacturing boom. Typically have fiberglass batt insulation in the attic (R-11 to R-19, well below the current R-49 requirement). Batts have compressed over 60+ years. Attic air sealing was not a consideration, so plumbing stacks, electrical penetrations, and HVAC chases are wide open to the attic.
Built under earlier versions of the Illinois energy code. Better insulated than older homes but still below current standards. Common issues include settled blown-in attic insulation, unsealed rim joists, and crawl spaces with failing fiberglass batts hanging from floor joists.
Regardless of when your Mattoon home was built, if your energy bills feel too high, your floors are cold in winter, or your upstairs is always hotter than your downstairs—the insulation is the most likely cause.
Open-cell and closed-cell spray foam for attic rooflines, rim joists, crawl spaces, and new construction.
Blown-in cellulose and fiberglass for attic floor upgrades and dense-pack wall retrofits.
Air sealing and insulation upgrades. We seal the air leaks first, then insulate to R-49 or above.
Vapor barriers, wall insulation, and vent sealing. Stop cold floors, moisture, and musty odors.
Cost-effective batt and roll insulation for new construction walls, garage ceilings, and floors.
Spray foam for pole barns and agricultural buildings across Coles County.
Spray foam for steel-framed commercial buildings, barndominiums, and warehouses.
Offices, retail, churches, schools, and commercial buildings in Mattoon and surrounding areas.
We are not a franchise operating out of a call center. We are not a crew driving two hours to reach your jobsite. Our shop is on Dewitt Avenue. Our crew lives in Coles County. When you call (217) 508-8095, you reach the people who will be in your attic or crawl space.
Being local means we schedule faster (next-business-day estimates for most Mattoon addresses), respond to emergencies without travel delays, and stand behind our work in the community where our name is on the line.
It also means we know the housing stock. We have insulated hundreds of homes within Mattoon city limits. We know which neighborhoods have balloon-frame construction, which subdivisions have crawl spaces with chronic moisture problems, and which streets have the post-war ranches with the original R-11 attic batts that need upgrading. That knowledge shows up in faster assessments, more accurate estimates, and better recommendations.
